Pinctada Cable Beach Resort and Spa in Cable Beach, Broome, Western Australia was designed by architects who understood and shared the vision of combining the true and iconic ‘Broome style holiday’ in a relaxed yet stylish way.
Architects used the natural and epic settings of the Kimberley region to guide their design. Of primary importance in a region where water means life, the Pinctada Cable Beach Resort and Spa relies heavily on painstaking water management. The entire development is connected to a grey water treatment system and wastewater is recycled for use in garden irrigation and cistern flushing.
A state of the art solar heating system is the primary source of instantaneous hot water, designed to minimise energy consumption.
The style of the resort is typically Broome, adopting a very recognisable school of architecture in the region today. It is characterised by the use of light, natural materials, colour bond and an emphasis on climate, the natural environment of the location and a relaxed living style. The style is simple, pure, sustainable and practical and reflects Australian traditions and heritage in architecture. Wherever possible all materials are from sustainable resources.
Paint colours were designed and manufactured especially for Pinctada Cable Beach using low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and the palette includes bursts of intense colour against the unified red pindan shades of the desert. Interior tones are natural with water-based low VOC used on the walls. Soft furnishings emphasise natural products such as rattan and pure wool and the floors are made of timber from sustainable sources.
The design of the resort takes advantage of natural air flows, with access to natural light throughout. An energy-efficient intelligent lighting system which boasts daylight harvesting technology is installed in every guest room and throughout the resort public areas.
The centralised energy management system also manages the air conditioning and links to the central reservation system to reduce energy consumption when guest rooms are unoccupied which contributes to an overall reduction of 85% in greenhouse gas emissions at the resort compared with a similar sized conventional resort.
All guest room appliances are Energy Star rated. The Cisco powered network, communications and computer systems used throughout the resort are also Energy Star rated.
In keeping with the climate, landscaping in association with Jamie Durie’s Patio Landscape Architecture and Design features mainly indigenous flora that requires minimal water and upkeep. This is interspersed with the occasional exotic planting for colour or contrast.
