Paspaley – The Most Beautiful Pearls In The World
www.paspaley.com

After the Second World War, the mother-of-pearl shell industry boomed as unprecedented demand ensured record prices right through to the mid 1950s. Then however, the invention of the plastic button changed forever the destiny of the pearling industry. Virtually overnight the industry was decimated as the market for mother-of-pearl shell vanished and fleets of pearling luggers were abandoned and left to rot on beaches along the coastline.

While most of the pearling industry was left, literally, high and dry, Nicholas Paspaley had a vision for a new future. Having witnessed the success of the Japanese in culturing Akoya pearls in Japan, Nicholas Paspaley dreamed of bringing the same technology to the South Seas. He dreamed of using the giant Pinctada maxima oyster to culture pearls of a quality and beauty to match the natural pearls that by then were virtually extinct.

That was the beginning of the journey that would take the Paspaley name to the top of the pearling industry. Over the next half century and through a long and often disappointing process of trial and error, Nicholas Paspaley's vision became reality with Paspaley emerging as the world's leading producer of quality South Sea cultured pearls.

As a pioneer in a harsh and unforgiving industry, Nicholas Paspaley Senior lived – and died – on the cusp of a revolution in the pearling industry.

Ironically, he died in 1984 on the very day he returned home with the finest crop of South Sea cultured pearls of his life.
